“Loving Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle and Mentor”

WATERBURY- Charles (“Bud”) Urniezus, age 99, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital, Sunday, October 20th 2019 after a brief illness. He the widower of Jessie (Urbanowicz) Urniezus.

Charles was born in Waterbury on March 9, 1920 to the late Alexander and Ursula (Verbylas) Urniezus.

Charles spent his younger years living in the Brooklyn section of Waterbury and was educated in local schools, graduating from St. Joseph’s Grammar School and Leavenworth High School. He was a WWII Navy veteran. Charles worked as a tinsmith at Scovill Manufacturing for 15 years. He used the GI Bill to go back to school and earn his 6th year teaching degree from the University of Hartford. He was a science teacher at Kingsbury School for 16 years and was the principal at Bucks Hill School at the time of his retirement in 1983. Charles loved the Red Sox and UCONN women’s basketball. He could happily talk for hours about either one. Charles had a sharp intellect and quick wit right to the end. He loved to entertain friends and family with stories of times past or present. Always the teacher, he never missed an opportunity to explain how something worked. Always the student, he was endlessly curious and never stopped learning. He was a kind and gentle man and will be greatly missed by those who were blessed to know and love him.

Left to cherish his memory is his son, Charles Jr, as well as several nieces. He was predeceased by his brother, Frank “Whitey” Urniezus and his sister, Marion “Babe” Erickson. The Urniezus family would like to send their sincere appreciation to Bruce and Brenda for all the love and support they gave Charlie over the years.

I was privileged to have been a student at Kingsbury Grammar School in the mid-60s with Mr. Urniezus as my 7th and 8th grade science teacher and eighth grade homeroom teacher. Then, years later, when he was principal at Merrriman School, my mother taught in their Pre-K Program and I did some teaching in the after school program there right out of college. What a thrill it was to see my grammar school teacher again after so many years. Seeing that he lived to the ripe age of 99 is a blessing. I will always remember him with great fondness! My condolences to all of his family. Grace and peace to you at this time.
Most sincerely, Barbara Dimando
