WATERBURY - The family of Denise Sadie Rizk sadly announces her passing on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, at the Cheshire House. One of God's most special and innocent children, she was born on June 20, 1952 to the late Rose and Fuad Rizk and was the younger sister of Linda Ann (Rizk) Noujaim, all of Waterbury, who were Denise's indomitable, fierce protectors, showering her with tender care her entire life.

A gentle and loving soul, Denise always had a bright and cheery "Hi!" for everyone she met. She attended Duggan and Croft Schools and competed for Special Olympics in basketball, her favorite sport. A Lakers fan, she also enjoyed shooting hoops outside the family home on Idylwood Avenue with her nieces, whom she cherished and babysat for often, listening to records, and teaching them the finer points of 80s music. She was proud to be trusted with them and kept a close eye on them while they did their homework; they spent many an afternoon playing cards together, especially "Go Fish."

Her record collection was impressive, and she could often be found laughing as her nieces danced across the room, and later, dancing herself whenever she had the chance at events held in the ballroom at the Village at East Farms, where she and Rosie moved together in 1998. Her excitement for rock and roll, especially the music of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, was well known by all, as was her sweet tooth. Denise would never turn down a tasty treat, be it cookies or candy, though her favorite was chocolate ice cream, which she ate morning, noon, and night.

Denise's fondness for "eating light" during dinner so she always had room for dessert was much-delighted common knowledge and will always be a treasured family memory. A social butterfly, Denise never sat still if she didn't have to, and for many years, she relished spending time at her sister and brother-in-law’s home, going to Mohegan Sun, and out to restaurants, specifically Friendly's and The Olive Garden, with many wonderful friends. Her hobbies included watching action movies, and she was well-versed in pop culture. She also enjoyed taking full advantage of all the activities offered at both the Village and the Cheshire House, including Bingo, cooking classes, and golf. She was a devoted "General Hospital" fan and never missed an episode, often reporting on a particular storyline she especially liked by informing anyone who asked that "it's getting good."

Denise was blessed to have many friends and family who shared many kindnesses with her throughout her life. She is survived by her most adored best friend, staunchest and fiercest shield and advocate, her sister, Linda, and her brother-in-law, former State Representative Selim G. Noujaim; her nieces, with whom she shared hundreds of grand moments, Bridget Marie Noujaim of Waterbury, Jessica Rose (Fortunato) Cusato of Westchester, NY, and Rebecca Lynn (Brian) Waite of Long Island, NY; one great-nephew, Vincenzo Elias; one great-niece, Emmanuelle Rose, and many dear cousins and terrific friends. In addition to her beautiful and deeply-missed parents, she was predeceased by her Aunt Adele and Uncle, former Waterbury Alderman Naim Rizk, who helped raise and support her.

Denise and her family would like to send a special thank you to all the staff from the Village at East Farms for their caring hearts during the years she lived there, and, more recently, to her companions and the personnel of the Cheshire House.

Funeral services for Denise will be held from Eastside Memorial, a Casey Family Funeral Home, 1987 East Main St., Waterbury, to SS. Peter & Paul Church, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, Dec. 28, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, Denise's family requests that memorial donations be made to one of Denise’s favorite places to go on an outing: The Maassir Annual Reunion Association (MARA), c/o 73 Highview Drive, Harwinton, CT 06791; or to VITAS Healthcare, 199 Park Road Ext., Middlebury, CT 06762.
