Dedicated to her faith, family, friends and those she cared for”

SOUTHBURY – Elizabeth “Betty” M. (Coretto) Garofalo, age 92 of Southbury, formerly of Waterbury, passed away peacefully at Saint Mary’s Hospital on Friday, September 4th 2020 after an extended illness. She was the widow of John Garofalo.

Betty was born June 5th 1928 in Waterbury, the seventh of nine children of Saverio and Elizabeth (Cullen) Coretto. She was raised in Waterbury and was a graduate of Leavenworth High School. She graduated from Saint Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing and then continued her studies at Sacred Heart University, where she received her degree in Business Management. Betty had a profound love for her country which was a big part of her life since 5 of her brothers served in World War II and 2 brothers served in the Korean War. Her faith and country were second only to her love for her family and caring for others, especially as a profoundly dedicated nurse. She was always a nurse at heart. She will always be remembered for the caring spirit she demonstrated as a nurse for her patients: in mind, body and soul. She enjoyed people, diversity, conversation, mentoring others, listening to music, dancing, baking and was blessed to have a very special group of friends and relatives. She was a fantastic cook and a warm and humble host and her and John welcomed all into their home. She was a former parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and more recently a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Southbury.

Elizabeth was the last surviving sibling of her family as she was predeceased by her brothers; Francis, Samuel, Joseph, James, Albert, Charles and Patrick Coretto, as well as her sister, Anne (Coretto) Zaccagnini. Although Betty and John never had children of their own, they were blessed with and had loving connections with many caring and loving nieces & nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews as well as one of her lifelong friends, who was like a sister to Betty, Carmella Portanova.

Betty had great loyal and loving friendships with many friends too many to list and because of her love for them, they themselves and her family know who they are. She defined family openly and broadly and she was a “mother” and “sister” and “aunt” to so many that she loved. Her motto was “Operate in love.”

Funeral services for Mrs. Garofalo will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Church 604 South Main St Waterbury. Burial will follow in Lake Elise Cemetery in Middlebury. Relatives and friends may visit with Betty’s family on Thursday morning from 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St Waterbury All restrictions and guidelines regarding COVID 19 will be strictly enforced. In lieu of flowers, to honor Betty’s memory donations to the Wounded Warriors Project, are greatly appreciated. Memories endure only if you share them so you are encouraged to leave a condolence, words of comfort or a personal memory with the Coretto/Garofalo family on Elizabeth’s tribute page at

Auntie Betty lived her life to its fullest with passion and purpose. A true Renaissance woman, her contagious energy embraced and shared her diverse gifts - her love of education, service, culinary magic, music and dance, and especially devotion to family. And that wry wit - unforgettable! Auntie Betty’s vibrant spirit enriched our world - her memory will always be a blessing. ❤️❤️❤️
