Obituary

THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE ASSISTING AND CARING FOR THE FAMILY OF MARY H. PILCH

“Devoted her life to Special Education”
WATERBURY – Mary H. Pilch, age 77 of Plantsville CT, formerly of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at the Vitas Innovative Care Unit of St. Marys Hospital after a brief illness.
Mary was born on May 23, 1943 in Waterbury, CT, the daughter of the late Samuel H. Pilch Sr and Mary R. (Kenney) Pilch. She was educated in local schools and earned her Bachelor’s degree from Central CT State (Teachers) College and her Masters Degree in Special Education from Vanderbilt University. She spent more than 35 years teaching special and challenged children in the Region 16 (Prospect-Beacon Falls) School System. Even after Mary retired from formal teaching, she would always volunteer her services to any family that needed guidance. Mary made many long lasting friendships with her students and families and any time she was in Prospect would always run into someone she taught in school. She will be missed by all who were blessed to know and love her.
Left to cherish her memories and honor her love and legacy, Margaret Moore (Don) of Georgetown TX, Susan Pilch of Waterbury and Joan Chipokas (Jeffrey) of Naugatuck CT, her brothers; Samuel H. Pilch Jr (Zenia) of Long Grove IL, Michael Pilch (Yolanda) of Buffalo Grove IL and Edward Pilch (Zetta) of New London IA. She was predeceased by her brother, John Pilch. Mary also leaves several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends who were there for her throughout her illness. The family gratefully acknowledges her friends, Elaine, Bonnie and Nancy as well as Dr Kert Sabbath, Masoud Azodi, Leslie Coopersmith, Kuang-Wen Tsao, Jesse Chua-Reyes and the Vitas staff for their outstanding care and compassion.
Funeral services for Ms. Pilch will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Anthony’s Church, Prospect CT at 11:00 a.m. Mary’s cousin, Msgr. Robert Tucker will be the principal celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Those planning to attend services are reminded that they must comply with all applicable State and Archdiocesan pandemic guidelines. Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been honored to assist the Pilch family in this difficult time. Hello,
I knew Mary from 2001 to 2014 when she was a docent at the Timexpo Museum. It was always a pleasure having Mary with us
when we greeted our students and told them the story of Timex. I can still see her wonderful smile and infectious laugh.

Mary was good with the students and at times knew exactly how to capture their attention. I was very sad to hear that her battle with cancer won. May Mary rest in peace.

I was fortunate enough to meet and get to know Mary when I first began taking art lessons in Cheshire at Artsplace following my wife's death. Even when you knew that Mary probably was not feeling her best in art class, she always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. I felt that we were soul mates as we often talked about our "before retirement" jobs in special education, she as a special education teacher and I as a speech pathologist. What a wonderful and special person. I miss her smile and her personality. Thanks Mary for what you gave me and so many others.

Sending you all my prayers and love. Mary always had a smile for everyone and brought sunshine into every room. Her heart was always open and her arms were always there to offer a warm hug. My love to all of you. May God's love and peace bring comfort to you in this time of loss.

My love,
Kara Kenney

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Pilch family and friends. Mary saw our girls grow up and always had the best conversations with them. She was great with kids. We will miss Mary and the brightness she brought to those around her. We will always remember her kindness.
