“Devoted her life to Special Education”
WATERBURY – Mary H. Pilch, age 77 of Plantsville CT, formerly of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at the Vitas Innovative Care Unit of St. Marys Hospital after a brief illness.
Mary was born on May 23, 1943 in Waterbury, CT, the daughter of the late Samuel H. Pilch Sr and Mary R. (Kenney) Pilch. She was educated in local schools and earned her Bachelor’s degree from Central CT State (Teachers) College and her Masters Degree in Special Education from Vanderbilt University. She spent more than 35 years teaching special and challenged children in the Region 16 (Prospect-Beacon Falls) School System. Even after Mary retired from formal teaching, she would always volunteer her services to any family that needed guidance. Mary made many long lasting friendships with her students and families and any time she was in Prospect would always run into someone she taught in school. She will be missed by all who were blessed to know and love her.
Left to cherish her memories and honor her love and legacy, Margaret Moore (Don) of Georgetown TX, Susan Pilch of Waterbury and Joan Chipokas (Jeffrey) of Naugatuck CT, her brothers; Samuel H. Pilch Jr (Zenia) of Long Grove IL, Michael Pilch (Yolanda) of Buffalo Grove IL and Edward Pilch (Zetta) of New London IA. She was predeceased by her brother, John Pilch. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Pilch family and friends. Mary saw our girls grow up and always had the best conversations with them. She was great with kids. We will miss Mary and the brightness she brought to those around her. We will always remember her kindness.

Mary will certainly be missed by many. She always put children and their families first. She bent over backwards daily to see that all children received all that they could to make themselves most successful.

My sincerest thanks to all for supporting our family during this sad time. Mary was our "old" sister as the oldest of the eight of us, but she always took our ribbing with a laugh. She cared so deeply for her "kids" and their families in Region 16. Even though she formally retired from teaching, she was always a teacher and would always be there for families that needed her support and advice. Mary was a great daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She will be truly missed by many So many kind people came to her services today and made a point of introducing themselves to me and sharing a memory with me. I personally thank all that were able to attend and all those that were not able to be there in person, but were there in spirit, thoughts and prayers. Mary, May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields. We will miss you!! Joan, Jeff, Sonia & Dennis

My deepest condolences on the passing of Mary. I will always remember her as such a kind, caring, and gentle lady. Mary was well known in Region 16 with the students and their parents. She was very devoted to her "kids", and once told me how she loved her job as an educator with hopes of making an impact in their lives. A smile, and always an encouraging word, was Mary's way. With sympathy to the family and friends of Mary. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.
