WATERBURY - Santa Teresa Perez Gonzalez, age 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Waterbury, CT, surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, March 23, 2019.

She was born on October 3, 1940 in Lajas, Puerto Rico to Modesta Izquierdo and Antonio Gonzalez and was one of 10 children. Santa graduated from Academia San Luis (St. Louis Academy) in San German, Puerto Rico at the age of 18 and 4 years later from the Catholic University of Puerto Rico, where she earned a Bachelor in English. Upon graduation, she joined a team of bilingual teachers from Puerto Rico and traveled to New York City where they taught for a year on the richness and diversity of bilingualism. She later earned a Master’s Degree from Quinnipiac University. After a year of teaching in New York City, she returned to Puerto Rico where she taught at Luis Munoz Marin for approximately 24 years. She married Francisco Perez Santana on 12/23/1969 of Guanica, Puerto Rico. In 1987, Santa, Francisco and the children, relocated to Waterbury, Ct after having been offered a job as a bilingual teacher. She taught at Wallace Middle School for an additional 28 years. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she joined the choir for many years. She was actively involved in the Waterbury community via various cultural, political and social justice causes.

Santa enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends and family on Sundays, visiting her family in Puerto Rico, music and politics. Santa will be sadly missed by her children, husband, close friends, church, the community and extended family.
