Obituary

THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE ASSISTING AND CARING FOR THE FAMILY OF SOPHIA POTTINGER-HEWITT

A DOSE OF ENCOURAGEMENT

The final hour came for Sophia L. Pottinger-Hewitt, an amazing woman also lovingly known as Michelle. She hailed from Sligoville St. Catherine, but spent her adult life at the beautiful country side of Waterbury Connecticut. This is where Sophia found a place to cultivate her marriage, raise her children, develop her relationship with God, meet some of her closest friends and start on a career journey that she was proud of. In Waterbury she found the place to call home. It is here she saw a combination of qualities; a diverse community, rich cultures, and beautiful, quiet and peaceful neighborhoods. But there was also a void for inspiration among some of the people she encountered and so she began to pour “A Dose of Encouragement” into everyone she met. Here she loved, struggled, fought, flourished and became a woman of God. Here, she LIVED in every essence of the word. And so it is only fitting that we are gathered here today to bid farewell to a game changer and one of the most inspirational persons this community has ever known.

She was born on November 28th, 1968 in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies, to Clive Pottinger and Merle Veronica Dolphy (both deceased). Her early life was spent in Jamaica, and at 13 years old, she migrated to the United States of America, and was raised in Mount Vernon, New York. After her mother’s untimely passing, while she was still a teenager, she assisted as best she could, in the rearing of her siblings.

Sophia performed well in school and had a passion for learning and self-improvement. She was educated in New York, had the opportunity to continue with her education at Fordham University, City University or (New York-Herbert H. Lehman). She worked from the age of 14, but it was when she worked as a Planner/Scheduler for Stanley Black & Decker she found joy in her tasks and gave them fourteen years of assiduous service. She then dedicated seven years as Customer Service Manager for a ballistics company, Astari Americans. Even in her sickness she was diligent in her efforts to meet her obligations.

While in high school, Sophia met Elvis Hewitt also know as Carl. He became her husband on May 3, 1990. The two had three children: Bryan, Karlet, and Karlesha Hewitt, and she mothered Carl Anthony Christie, her bonus baby.

She is the founder of “A Dose of Encouragement Women’s Empowerment Events”. Just like the numerous streams of Waterbury that pours into the Naugatuck River, so was Sophia’s ministry, pouring the word of God into the people around her, teaching them that God loved and valued them, in spite of their flaws. Her reassuring words helped people to see themselves the way God sees them: fearfully and wonderfully made and forgiven. Sophia is a part of numerous groups and missions that teaches and mentor men, women and children to be bold in their life, ask God for what they want and thank him daily for every blessing. Knitted together, a women’s group that encourages women to tell their story and live free from shame, is just one such organization that she co-piloted.

Sophia was the eldest of nine children, Michael her first brother, is now deceased, she is survived by her seven siblings: Mark, Marsha, Marcel, Seth, Max, Stephanie, and Kandilee. Many aunts, and uncles, countless cousins, four children, five grandchildren; Adam, Mekyh, Casyn, Ameer, Melani, and her devoted partner to the end of 38 years.

Every morning, for so many years, her worship started with her favorite gospel music and the word of the true and Living God. If you knew her, and she felt moved to inspire you, and you didn’t mind your phone going off early in the morning, you were getting that 5 AM Dose of Encouragement, where like Lauryn Hill, she introduce, then produce, words so profuse, you thought they were individually customized for you and your situation.

Our Soph, Michelle or Miss Hewitt as she is lovingly called, was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, friend, aunt, niece, and cousin. She had a memory like that of an elephant; remembering every birthday and special events, commemorating us with thoughtful cards, well designed plaques or unique gifts and care packages. She celebrated everything about life and found consolation even in its misfortunes, finding hope in Romans 8:28: And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.

Sophia isn’t gone from us forever, we will continue to be inspired to live by her example and make an effort to plant God’s words like seeds, into our hearts, the hearts of our loved ones, and to everyone we meet, give a Dose of Encouragement.

Funeral and Service will take place on December 11, 2019 at 11am at Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Tribute Center located at 1987 East Main Street, Waterbury, CT 06705. Burial will follow at New Pine Grove Cemetery located at 850 Main Street, Waterbury, CT 006705.
